Simply Supported Beam With Overhang on Bothsides

In this example, readers get clear idea of how to find reactions of simply supported beam when overhang is on both sides of supports.

Example

Calculate of the reactions of simply supported beam with overhang on both sides of support. As shown in figure below.

Simply Supported Beam with Overhang on Both Sides

For calculating reaction R1, take moments about point D

\(\sum M_{D}\space = 0\)

Law of equilibrium says;

Clockwise moments = Counter clockwise moments

photo 5

R1 x 5 + 200 x 2 x 1  = 200 x 2 x 1 + 1000 x 2 + 600 x 7

5R1 + 400 = 400 + 2000 + 4200 = 6600

R1 = 1240 kg

Now for Reaction R2, consider upward forces are equal to downward forces

\(\sum F_{V}\space = 0\)

R1 + R2 = 600 + 1000 + 200 x 4

1240 + R2 = 2400

R2 = 2400 -1240

R2 = 1160 kg.
